Girls and Nudity. (That title should get this blog a ton of hits, right?)

I’m a feminist at heart. At age 10, I went to my mother and asked her why Disney movies were sexist. The girls had to get married, most of the time a mom wasn’t around. She was impressed and amused. By the way, favorite Disney character is Belle. Up until she married the Beast anyway. I read voraciously as a child, and I could relate to Belle.

Anyway.

At the TCA press tour, a reporter asked Lena Dunham why she’s naked so often on Girls. “I don’t get the purpose of all of the nudity on the show, by you particularly, and I feel like I’m walking into a trap where you go, ‘Nobody complains about the nudity on Game of Thrones,’ but I get why they are doing it,” Molloy said. “They are doing it to be salacious and, you know, titillate people. And your character is often naked just at random times for no reason.”

I question the nudity on GOT. I often call it Game of Bones. I get why it’s there, but that doesn’t make it any less gratuitous. There are no ‘fat’ women on GOT, that must be why it’s not complained about.

I love Lena Dunham. I love Girls and I think she’s brilliant. If any of the other 3 women on Girls were naked often, it wouldn’t even be a question. Dunham is not a size 0, she has a ‘normal’ body. I don’t understand how in this day and age, this can be an issue. It’s ridiculous. It’s worse than so many people calling the episode with Patrick Wilson unbelievable. I wouldn’t call her nudity in Girls random, either. It’s in the bathtub, after sex, in a shower, etc. Aren’t those normal nudity times?

Judd Apatow is awesome. I loved his response to the reporter. Jenni Konner as well. Here’s the link to the full story: Article

Here is the reporter’s take on it: TheWrap

I still think he’s an ass. It’s just an idiotic question to ask. It’s the same as asking ‘Why do you breathe so much’?, or ‘Your character seems to change clothes a lot, why is that’? I think his goal was to get a reaction and he got one.

Here’s an article from last year that I loved, via The Daily Beast: Stay Naked, Lena Dunham

I love that Lena Dunham is so comfortable in her own skin that she can show so much of it, especially in a world where being thin is expected. I wish I had people like her to look up to when I was younger. I could never be comfortable enough in my body to show all of it in front of a camera, for millions of viewers. Good for her.
