Long Time No See; Love Review.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been over a year since I last wrote.  I was feeling antsy lately, about not having an outlet to vent or talk about stuff I love.  Then I remembered this lovely little site.

Diving right in.  Netflix just continues to produce programming that I love. Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Kimmy Schmidt.  Now, the Judd Apatow produced Love.

love

Love follows two people; Mickey and Gus.  Mickey’s the “bad girl”, her life is messy; she has an asshole boyfriend.  Gus is overly nice and very nerdy, he has a live in girlfriend.  Fast forward and they’re both single.  Gus’ girlfriend admits that she cheated on him, Mickey’s boyfriend, in her own words, loved cocaine more than her. She goes to a gas station to get coffee, forgets her wallet; meets Gus.  Usually meet cutes don’t involve one person threatening to steal coffee and flipping off security cameras, but it works.

This show really sucks you in. 10 episodes later, I want more.  I love nontraditional romantic comedy sitcoms.  You’re the Worst or Catastrophe are two other such shows that I absolutely love.  I generally despise shows that pair an obviously beautiful woman with a nerdy, unattractive man.  I do find Paul Rust oddly attractive, but you get my drift.  However, in Love, Mickey’s many and serious problems are a huge part of her identity, an why she even falls for Gus in the first place.  It’s believable, in contrast with shows like the Big Bang Theory, King of Queens, etc.  What Penny sees in Leonard, I’ll never know.  But Gus is charming, kind to a fault, and funny; something that Mickey is not used to in a significant other.

Love is funny, relateable, and quirky.  I did get hipster rage from one party episode, hipsters as far as the eye could see. I may have mumbled hipster doofus under my breath a few times. If you can get past that, you won’t regret it.

Moment of Zen.

I have a definitive moment that Jon Stewart made me feel better.

It was the first Chick fil-A day, started by Huckabee and it took off like wildfire. I remember thinking that it wouldn’t, this was coming from Huckabee after all. I had to run errands that afternoon, and Target is behind CFA. There was a cop directing traffic because the back up was that bad. I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. How in the world were all these people okay with backing a CEO who donated money to pray the gay away camps for teens? How can all these people be so callous? I was feeling pretty down about it the rest of the day, except for seeing all the CFA people in Target, an LBGT friendly company. I sat down to watch Jon Stewart the next day, as I usually do, and saw this:

chick-fil-a-300x300

I laughed. A lot. I felt better. There are numerous times Jon Stewart’s commentary on fucked up political shit have made me feel hopeful. That no matter how many backwards people there were, progress was happening.

I often said that Jon Stewart is never allowed to leave, because he’s the only one able to verbalize what I feel and am unable to. He can’t stay forever, unfortunately. I’m so sad he’s retiring, but optimistic that they’ll find a suitable successor.

May I suggest Amy Poehler?

Midnight Radio.

The New Year is upon us. I glanced at my resolutions from last year. I didn’t do horrible, but some things I forgot about and didn’t even attempt.

So, the same failed ones for 2015? Nope. I have two.

Read books off Stephen King’s recommended reading list. I have only read 12.

Be kinder. To myself, to others.

That’s it. Easy, right?

I leave you with my favorite song from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

So hold onto each other. You gotta hold on tonight.

Happy New Year’s.

End of an Era.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve written anything. Sorry, guys. I started college, my parents visited, and my child hit the terrible two’s. It’s been busy.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you heard of David Letterman’s impending retirement, and Stephen Colbert being named as his replacement. I haven’t watched Dave in years, but it was still a bit sad for me to hear.

When I was in junior high, my dad owned a little arcade/general store. He’d get home around the time Dave came on, and I’d still be awake. I didn’t see him much then, he was working a lot, so this started our tradition of watching Dave and talking. We talked about everything, college, religion, politics. Stupid human and pet tricks were our favorite episodes, along with the bird callers. Anytime I think of my dad during my childhood, this sticks out in my mind. As far as I remember, this only lasted one summer. My dad got a job in the fall that was a regular 9-5, and I had to go back to school, thus going to bed earlier. We’d stay up on the weekends sporadically and chat, but it wasn’t the same. Letterman has always held an emotional attachment for me, even when my dad stopped watching him because he said Dave got ‘old and bitter’.

So long, Dave. Thanks for the memories.

A Long Time Ago; We Used to Be Friends.

SPOILER ALERT: IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE AND DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE PLOT/DETAILS, STOP READING NOW!!

I got into Veronica Mars shortly after it was cancelled. She was, and still is, one of my favorite female TV characters. She was spunky, quick witted, wonderfully flawed. Alas, the CW didn’t agree and cancelled VMars, leaving so much left unfinished.

When I heard about Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas’ Kickstarter campaign, I was giddy. So many people I knew were fans, I had no doubt the movie would get made. I even kicked in $20.

Cut to last weekend. I had been impatiently waiting for the movie to come out. I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to my expectations, I wouldn’t like the plot, etc. I was worried for nothing.

The Veronica Mars movie was such a wonderful love letter to fans of the show. It was like a season, condensed into an hour and 47 minute movie. Everyone was there, Dick, Madison, Wallace, Mac, Piz, Keith, Sachs, Weevil, Vinnie, and of course Logan. Who, by the way, ages like a fine wine. That Navy uniform? Drool. To quote Cougar Town, “he makes my lady parts beep”. Sorry. Or not.

I love that Veronica left everything behind, tried to start over and be a completely different person, only to turn it all back upside down. I love so much about the movie, I don’t have enough words. I have absolutely no criticism. Everyone just seamlessly transitioned back to their characters. Nothing about it felt stiff or forced. Given that it’s been 10 years since they’ve played those roles, that’s impressive.

Please, more Veronica Mars. Go to Netflix and bring it back, a la Arrested Development. Or a sequel. I’d be content with that.
