Cruzing Along.

Texas really can’t catch a break when it comes to politicians. George W., Rick Perry, now Ted Cruz. 

Cruz decided to ‘filibuster’ against the ACA. He wasted 21+ hours talking against a vote that is still going to happen. So, what did it accomplish? Nothing really, except getting Cruz headlines. I’m sure he hopes that will help his maybe bid for President in 2016. I believe his state has the greatest amount of uninsured residents. Nice.

The most liberal friends and family I have live in Texas. Which is odd, considering how conservative Texas is. Look at the strict abortion ban that was passed, despite Wendy Davis’ best efforts. 

Legal abortion is to protect women. It’s not as if Roe v. Wade was passed and all pregnant women rejoiced. Making abortion illegal, or strictly restricting it is only going to kill women, not save babies. These same people want to cut welfare, food stamps, etc. They don’t care about you once you stop being a fetus. 

Let me share a story with you. My story.

I was 19 and pregnant. I was married, the birth control method we used failed. No Plan B back then. About 8 months earlier, I had been hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis and my body was still recovering. I was 9 weeks along when I had an abortion. Since my life was at risk, the doctor gave me a 15% chance of survival, my medical insurance paid for it. Not upfront, though. I had to fork out around $400 and wait almost a year to be reimbursed. It was easily the hardest decision I have ever made. I was an emotional wreck going in and coming out of it. Had the process been any more difficult, I honestly don’t know if I would have gone through with it, and I would most likely not be here today. I think this is honestly what lawmakers are going for. Make an already difficult decision even harder due to the hoops you have to jump through. Luckily, it was pretty straightforward. I made an appointment at the clinic, spoke to the counselor over the phone, and that was it. I had a 6 week post checkup in which I also saw a counselor. This was before my state enacted very strict abortion regulations earlier this year. 

I don’t understand why a mostly out of pocket procedure has so many lawmakers fighting to ban it. What will they go after next?
